Our Time

Busy Days

It seems like we have been home from the hospital for a long, long time, but in fact this is only our second/third week home. We have experienced the strange feeling of coming home to all that WAS normal when we left, but now we stand in our home with two little babies in our arms and all that was so normal is suddenly changed. The television seems uninteresting, the Olympics…”Oh, we didn’t really know that they were happening!” ‘Dinner time’ is anywhere between 17:00 and 23:59, and usually is accompanied by loud shouts and naked breasts!

Warren goes back to work on Monday (25th August) and Randi will be left alone with our two babies for the first time since they were born. Mom has been practicing and perfecting the art of breast feeding (including lifting, placing and ‘burping’) two babies at the same time. This is strongly advised for twins, to save time. They have been breast fed at the same time since day 1, but Dad has always been there to help with the practicalities. Randi is also slowly but surely on the mend after the Caesarean operation. We wish Randi all the best of luck and lots of patience.

Since we got home from the hospital a lot of our time and energy has been spent on building the twin’s body weight up to what it was when they were born (Hamilton 3.2 kg and Victoria 2.2 kg). We have had a strict routine of feeding which goes as follows:- every third hour they get woken up and breast fed for 20 minutes. After this they get bottle fed with 45 and 35 ml of milk supplement. Then they get put on the breast again for “Desert”. This last step is more to stimulate milk production and we use them as living breast pumps… This happens about 8 times a day and takes about 45 minutes, each feed.

We can be very proud of our efforts!! Hamilton gained 300grams and Victoria gained 250grams in one week!! That brings them both up to ‘birth weight’ and we can change their feeding routine.
We now give them slightly less milk supplement and let them (and us) sleep an hour longer in between feeds. This makes a very big difference to us during the night time!!

So, as you can see, we are slowly (quickly…?) settling down and finding some sort of sanity in this insanely chaotic time in our lives.

The two new members of our family become more ‘integrated’ and wonderful by the day. We are filled with love and anticipation.
